The project agreements are the result of a request for PG-E (ORGP) adpens launched in February following a Decision by the CPUC in November 2019, which identified potential reliability problems from 2021. A new study by current and former modellers of MIT`s energy system attempts to quantify this. Instead of looking at the value of a single battery project or the role of energy storage in a fully charred grid, as previous studies have envisioned, the researchers tested the value of energy storage as the penetration rate of wind and sun increases to 50% and beyond and energy storage increases. This dynamic will take place in many parts of the grid over the next 15 or 20 years. Storage in remote renewable power plants can shift exports to a time when wires are not overloaded and provide more clean electricity for a certain amount of renewable energy and transport capacity. So a 2/3 wear rate may seem brutal, but overall we think it`s really pretty remarkable. A year ago, the UK battery market did not exist; Now we have a capacity of 500MW with revenues blocked until 2034.

On the capacity side, regional markets have different rules for assessing the value of storage as a reliable capacity resource because it does not operate indefinitely as gas-fired power plants can. The formula used to determine this value affects whether memory can compete. PJM`s 10-hour duration prevents competition from batteries, while other markets consider that 4-hour batteries are perfectly capable of providing reliable capacity.
